'I told everybody': Paul Merson says 22-year-old Chelsea player is turning out to be absolutely brilliant

Paul Merson claims Chelsea’s Kai Havertz is now showing he’s the kind of player that he originally thought he was.

Havertz, 22, is currently enjoying a very productive spell in the Blues line-up with a run of consistent starts.

The German forward is the preferred number nine in Thomas Tuchel’s side, albeit he can drop into more creative positions if Romelu Lukaku is on the pitch at the same time.

Havertz, who’s in this purple patch of form, now has 11 goals and five assists so far this season in all competitions.

For the youngster, it’s got to be about building on this momentum at Stamford Bridge.

In fairness, his debut Chelsea season last year didn’t go to plan. He redeemed himself in perfect fashion by scoring a winner in a Champions League final.

This season feels like Blues fans are starting to see the immense talent that made him a mega hit at Bayer Leverkusen, though.

Merson thinks Havertz is turning out to be an absolutely brilliant player:

“I told everybody about Kai Havertz earlier this season – what a player he’s turning out to be!” Merson Sportskeeda.

“It took him a bit of time as he struggled with COVID-19 at the start, but now we’re beginning to see the player who absolutely ripped it up in Germany. The goal he scored against Newcastle United, in my opinion, is undoubtedly one of the goals of the 2021-22 Premier League season so far.”

A look through the archives does show Merson last season predicting Havertz will be a “superstar”.

Chelsea investment worthwhile

Havertz’s reputation across Europe a couple of years ago was as one of the best young players in the game, so it’s no surprise to see him reaching his recent levels.

His £71million transfer fee always had the potential to be a great investment.

Of course, he’s got to keep this form up for a longer period.

However, it massively helps him now that he’s found a role in this Chelsea side and is playing with huge confidence.
