'I'd be tempted': TalkSPORT pundit thinks £60m player would rather join Chelsea than Newcastle this summer

Danny Murphy thinks Leicester City star James Maddison would prefer to join a “ready-made club” like Chelsea over Newcastle United.

First of all, it’s important to stress there’s no current rumours linking Maddison with a transfer to Chelsea.

However, talkSPORT pundit Murphy has used the Blues as an example of somewhere he thinks Leicester’s attacking midfielder would prefer over interested buyers Newcastle.

The Daily Mail claims Newcastle are in ongoing talks with Leicester about Maddison’s signature, but won’t bid as much as the £60million asking price.

Aged 25, the Foxes talisman is fresh off the back of an excellent 2021/22 campaign. He finished last season with 18 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.

However, the playmaker somehow can’t seem to force his way back into the plans of England manager Gareth Southgate.

Maddison prefer Chelsea over Newcastle

TalkSPORT’s Murphy suggests that an elite club like Chelsea would have a great chance of signing Maddison if they came forward with a bid to rival Newcastle. As it stands, there’s no rumours in the media of that happening.

He thinks the Leicester star will be “tempted” to complete a move to St James’ Park, but it won’t quite be the same as if one of the established big boys knocked on the door for his signature.

“He’s a super talent, the only question mark over James Maddison is his application and sometimes his attitude, but his talent is up there,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“At the moment you’d argue that out of Leicester and Newcastle, Leicester are better but Newcastle will quickly overtake them.

“He’s earning a lot of money at Leicester, but I’d be tempted if I was him. However, if Chelsea or one of the other top four clubs were to come in, I’d rather go to a ready-made top club.”

Chelsea’s focus elsewhere

For Chelsea, it’s clear they’re looking to strengthen other areas of the pitch rather than finding a creative attacking midfielder.

Brighton’s left-back Marc Cucurella, who’s reportedly agreed personal terms with the Blues, is one player being strongly linked with joining.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel’s side may not be after Leicester’s Maddison right now, but they do want his teammate Wesley Fofana. It’s reported they’re still chasing a deal for talented centre-back Fofana.
