‘Just think’: Gary Neville now claims Manchester United player would be absolutely brilliant at Chelsea
Gary Neville envisaged a world where Cristiano Ronaldo played for Chelsea rather than Manchester United.
Speaking on his own podcast, Neville suggested the iconic Portugal forward would suit Thomas Tuchel’s team to a tee.
Ronaldo gave a timely reminder last night that, at the age of 37-year-old, he could still probably play for any side on the planet.
When United have needed their number seven the most, he has generally delivered.
Take yesterday’s game against Chelsea for example.
Tuchel’s men controlled proceedings for nearly 90 minutes, with their pressure eventually paying off on the hour mark thanks to a delicious strike from Marcos Alonso.
Recently, Ralf Rangnick’s troop have totally crumbled after conceding the first goal.
However, they managed to rally together and squeeze a point out of the European champions.
Or rather, Ronaldo managed to squeeze a point out of the European champions.
Would Cristiano suit Chelsea?
Chelsea had barely got back into their own half after scoring before CR7 stunned them into silence.
United only required two minutes to level proceedings via the boot of their talismanic top scorer.
Having regained possession from the Blues, Nemanja Matic scooped a ball over the top of the back-line, right into Ronaldo’s path.
He did the rest, nearly taking Edouard Mendy’s head off with a scorching strike.
That took his tally for the campaign up to 23, but marked his very first against Chelsea in the Premier League.
Just imagine how many more the sacred attacker could have on his CV featuring for a team higher up in the division.
“There were rumours at the start of the season that he was going to go to Manchester City and you think of Manchester City’s problems in certain games this season where they haven’t been able to score,” said Neville.
“Think of the amount of pull-backs at the other end from Reece James and Alonso and those little passes across the goal from Chelsea and they’ve got no one in there.
“City do so much of it. Just think how many goals he’d score in this Chelsea team tonight or the City team with those pull-backs we’ve seen tonight, he’d score hundreds!”
Romelu or Ronaldo?
Instead, Chelsea have been forced to rumble on despite the limitations of Romelu Lukaku.
At the beginning of the campaign, many banked on the Belgian to challenge Ronaldo for the Golden Boot award.
There will only be one winner out of the two.
Lukaku has been stuck on five league goals since the 29th of December.
Ronaldo has scored twice that many in the same period.
Perhaps Tuchel could work his charm on Cristiano and bring him to the Bridge in the summer…
