Jody Morris says 29-year-old Chelsea star had a great start to the season

‘Most consistent’: Jody Morris says 29-year-old was more reliable than any Chelsea player at the start of the season

Jody Morris picked Edouard Mendy as the most dependable Chelsea player from the early season stages.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, the former Blues coach highlighted Mendy’s reliability from the primary months of the campaign.

Awesome Edouard

The goalkeeper has been a sturdy force ever since he stepped foot in Stamford Bridge nearly a year-and-a-half ago.

After a terrific initial term, which saw him lift the Champions League with a record number of clean sheets for a debutant in the competition, the Senegal international continued to impress between the sticks.

Between August and November in 2021, Mendy only conceded five top flight goals, ensuring seven shut-outs along the way.

He particularly shone away to Liverpool and Brentford, where had it not been the ‘keeper’s heroics, Chelsea may have lost both matches.

Morris makes Mendy claim

Due to the excellence of their gloved guardian, the Blues picked up numerous points on route to reaching the top of the table.

However, Morris felt the team’s overall output did not reflect those of their number one goalie.

“I think it’s been a little bit indifferent because I have to say when they were getting some really good results at the beginning of the season, I actually felt they wasn’t performing to the level in which they were towards the end of the season before,” he said.

“I felt after maybe seven or eight games, Mendy was probably their most consistent player, which considering the results they were getting, you wouldn’t usually think they were playing that great if the goalkeeper is one of the most consistent performers.

“I think they’ve looked solid as far as they are hard to break down, but I think they’d like a bit more going forward.”

What needs to change at Chelsea?

Tuchel would probably ask for improvement at both ends of the field.

After that virtually impenetrable start, Mendy’s net has been breached 13 times in the league.

The 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers is the only clean sheet he’s managed from the end of November onwards.

He was on top form against Liverpool last weekend, yet still conceded twice.

Chelsea have frequently scored goals, yet they haven’t found a frequent scorer.

Jorginho is the main marksmen across all competitions with nine, closely followed by Mason Mount and Romelu Lukaku on seven.

In total, 17 different players have converted for the Blues in 2021/22.

Although this is not exactly an issue, someone other than the Italian midfielder should be heading the rankings.

Like Lukaku, for example, who could be the catalyst for Chelsea’s success if he consistently hits the target.

Chasing City

Tuchel will demand even more from his offensive outlets now Mendy is off at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Everybody needs to move in the same direction in order to retain any hope of catching Manchester City.

A tall ask, but not an impossible one.
