'My concern': Sky pundit worried 25-year-old Chelsea player will get dropped from England's World Cup squad
Stephen Warnock has explained he’s worried Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell could end up missing out on a place in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup.
England’s spot is already booked for the World Cup later this year, which actually starts in November due to the international competition taking place in Qatar.
Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate currently has a group of players together, but it remains to be seen how many will make the final plane for Qatar.
Chelsea defender Chilwell is someone with 17 England caps that was part of the squad at last year’s Euros.
However, the 25-year-old’s not part of the latest England camp due to his long-term injury layout.
The Blues left-back’s not played since mid-November after suffering a knee ligament injury, and his official return date is still unknown.
Sky Sports pundit Warnock is fearful that Chilwell’s problems could have a knock on effect on him securing a place at the next World Cup.
“My concern is for Ben Chilwell of all players because of that injury leading into the new season. How is he going to recover from it? Will it take him a while to get his confidence back?” Warnock told Sky Sports.
Chilwell should be fine
As long as Chilwell’s back playing by the start of next season, he should be a safe bet to make Southgate’s final squad.
The brilliant wing-back, described as one of Chelsea’s most important players by Jason Cundy, is one of England’s best options on the left of defence.
Manchester United’s Luke Shaw has been a favourite at left-back in recent times.
There wasn’t a more in-form English left-back than Chilwell before his injury a few months into this season, though.
