'One of my favourites': Stan Collymore absolutely loves Chelsea player, but he's been disappointed by him this season
Stan Collymore has said he’s a massive admirer of Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku, but admits he’s been a massive disappointment this season.
Unfortunately, Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge has not played out like everyone wanted.
The Blues signed the 28-year-old last summer from Inter Milan, giving him the No.9 jersey to signify he was the new talisman in attack.
However, the Belgian centre-forward is in a position where he’s not even been a regular starter in the past couple of months.
It’s a big concern that only five of Lukaku’s 12 goals this season have come in the Premier League, which is why so many are labelling him as one of the biggest flops of the year.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has reportedly found it a big surprise to see Lukaku struggle so much adapting to his methods. Some of his anonymous displays at striker have resulted in teammate Kai Havertz playing above him most of the time.
Collymore is absolutely gutted to see a player that he likes struggle so much this season:
“This season has been one to forget for Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku and it’s been really disappointing because he is actually one of my favourite players,” Collymore said.
“Lukaku was enjoying life at Inter Milan and working incredibly well under Antonio Conte – so just stay. Despite him coming in and getting off to a decent start, it is still a terrible fit and we’re seeing this now.”
Rio Ferdinand is of the opinion that Lukaku is still a “world class” striker. He’s just not managed to make his mark at Chelsea yet.
Spread of Chelsea goals
In fairness, this Blues squad have done well to be the third highest scorers in the Premier League division.
Mason Mount’s the only individual to hit double figures for league goals this season at Stamford Bridge, but they’ve still got 68 goals in their 34 top-flight matches.
There’s a significant gap up to Liverpool and Manchester City, though, who’ve both scored 80+ goals.
It’s been great to see Chelsea players all over the park contributing in attack, especially some of the defenders.
However, a marquee centre-forward netting 20+ goals has been one of the major differences between them and the top two.
