Alan Shearer lavished praise on Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic after his weekend display in the demolition of Norwich City at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues maintained their position at the top of the Premier League table by beating strugglers Norwich 7-0.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are living up to the hype of title contenders right now. However, impressive duo Liverpool and Manchester City are breathing down their necks.

Shearer, speaking in his regular Premier League Team of the Week segment, picked out Chelsea’s midfield maestro Kovacic.

The £40million Croatian was too hot for Norwich to handle in the centre of the park.

“The Croat bossed the midfield and his two assists were reward for a passing masterclass,” Shearer said

In addition, he gave special credit to Reece James, Ben Chilwell for their own individual performances against Norwich.

Kovacic standout Chelsea player this season

Kovacic, 27, has been simply outstanding so far this campaign.

He’s now got five Premier League assists to his name already this season after setting up two goals at the weekend, including a stunning pass through to Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The central midfielder is a go-to figure right now for Blues manager Tuchel and he’s now penetrating opponents with more attacking passes.

Chelsea’s defence has been imperious in the last couple of months, but you could argue Kovacic has been the standout man.

Best is still to come from him

Aged 27, Kovacic may be about to enter the prime years of his career.

Chelsea fans know how much talent he’s got after a few excellent years at the Bridge.

For him, he can cement his spot in the XI if he continues with the same attacking outputs. He may finally be able to fill the void left by Cesc Fabregas.
