Pat Nevin amazed by ‘perfect technique’ of £45m Chelsea star who’s recently stepped up
Pat Nevin has raved about the “perfect technique” Chelsea star Ben Chilwell showed at the weekend with his goal in the win against Brentford.
The Blues defended valiantly on Saturday to beat their London rivals 1-0 in a Premier League encounter.
In-form defender Chilwell, 24, provided the piece of magic to clinch three points for the visitors. The £45million left wing-back scored a memorable goal on the stroke of half time, unleashing a half-volley that he timed perfectly from just inside the Brentford box.
It now means he’s scored in each of his last three appearances for club and country, including in back-to-back Premier League matches. In addition, he netted during the international break for England in a World Cup qualifier against Andorra.
Nevin has waxed lyrical Chilwell’s recent impact and feels that he’s really stepped up since Blues manager Thomas Tuchel reintroduced him to the starting line-up.
“What is clear is that any player who looks sharp and has been rested has to be considered for the starting line-up. Ben Chilwell fell squarely into that category,” Nevin wrote for the club’s official website.
“After a stuttering start when Marcos Alonso was the go-to player, Ben was ready to step up as soon as his Spanish amigo needed a break. The results have been spectacular. Three goals in three games is stunning but what was really spectacular was the winner against Brentford.
“The technique was impeccable, the ball was still rising from the bounce, the conditions were zippy to say the least, and he couldn’t lash at it. He had to concentrate on perfect technique under pressure, strike through it perfectly and he nailed it. I’m not sure we will see a cleaner strike by any player this season. It was a goal worthy of winning any game.”
Ben Chilwell patience paid off
Of course, Chilwell would have been pulling his hair out in the opening month of the season when he was stuck on the bench behind club teammate Marcos Alonso.
Chelsea have the luxury of having two quality players that impress as a left wing-back.
The door has opened recently for Chilwell, though, who has stepped up superbly and shown real professionalism.
His battle with Alonso for the starting XI role is fascinating and one that demonstrates how strong the squad looks right now at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has even praised Chilwell recently for his patience.
Can he overtake Luke Shaw?
Manchester United’s Luke Shaw is the first-choice left-back right now in an England shirt. In fairness, he was outstanding for the Three Lions at Euro 2020 and is there on merit under current manager Gareth Southgate.
However, Chilwell is good enough to get back that starting left-back role for his country.
The rapid full-back is someone that’s performed in a Champions League final and should only keep improving while being pushed by club manager Thomas Tuchel.
