Clinton Morrison believes Chelsea can solve the goalscoring issues that they have had for years by signing Napoli ace Victor Osimhen.

On Saturday, it was arguably the first time in a while that Chelsea were let down by their defence more than their attack.

Graham Potter’s men could and should have scored more goals from 20 attempted shots against Everton, but two goals would have been enough if it was not for their disappointing defence.

But overall this season, Chelsea are one of the best teams defensively — having conceded the fourth-fewest goals in the league — and the lack of goals have been their number one problem.

But it is clearly not a Graham Potter problem, because this has been an issue at the club in the last several years.

It is quite unbelievable that no Chelsea player reached 20 goals in a Premier League season since Diego Costa in 2016/17.

In the last two seasons, their top scorers in the league were Jorginho with his seven penalties in 2020/21 and Mason Mount with 11 goals last term.

Kai Havertz currently leads Chelsea’s league goalscoring chart with seven goals, so he is likely to surpass Jorginho’s record two seasons ago, but not by many, based on his scoring rate.

Morrison argued that Chelsea should consider re-integrating Lukaku into their squad next season or sign Napoli’s Osimhen.

“Obviously, there have been talks of Romelu Lukaku coming back from loan next season,” the former Crystal Palace forward told Sky Sports (via Football Daily).

“Can he be that focal point? If you’ve got Lukaku fit, with the players they [Chelsea] have brought in that can create stuff, he should be able to score goals in that team.

“So that’s one to watch.

“I’ve [also] always said that the one I’d get, although I don’t think they’ll do business for, is Osimhen, the guy at Napoli.

“I think he’s unbelievable and at the moment, he scores goals.

“Chelsea do have the money to go and get him, but we have to watch this space.

“But if [they just] get Lukaku back, he’ll score goals in that Chelsea team, for sure.”

Recent reports actually suggested that Chelsea are keeping an eye on Osimhen, although for a striker on his form, there will be plenty of competitors for his signature.

However, it is perhaps too optimistic to expect that signing one player would solve Chelsea’s goalscoring problems.

Bear in mind that, Havertz, Timo Werner, and Lukaku were all scoring 20+ goals the season before they joined Chelsea.

That said, Morrison also had a point that the players Chelsea have brought in have also proved that they can create chances and this time, things would be different with a reliable goalscorer in this team.
