’So fit’: Paul Merson totally amazed by athletic Chelsea star who’s turning into a ‘superstar’

Paul Merson has claimed that Chelsea player Reece James is now turning into a “superstar” after a brilliant start to the season.

James, 21, has been one of Europe’s most in-form players in the opening few months of the 2021/22 campaign.

Chelsea’s right wing-back has five goals and five assists in 14 Blues appearances. In addition, he impressed for England during the recent international break.

Thomas Tuchel’s squad at Stamford Bridge is filled with so many young talents to come out of the academy at Cobham, which is why this is a very popular group with supporters.

Pundit Merson has raved about the ability of Chelsea defender James, noticing how athletic and strong he is on the pitch.

“Reece James is becoming a superstar and he is already Chelsea’s top scorer this season,” Merson wrote.

“I said ages ago that Reece James could become England’s best right back. I still think he’s more of a wing back but what a player he is now.

“He keeps his game so simple. He’s a strong lad, so fit, and he scores goals. It’s no fluke his finishing is so good because he used to be a centre forward.”

James a total powerhouse

James really does have a bit of everything to his game.

His attacking contributions are throwing his name into the limelight, so he’ll hope he can continue scoring and creating goals.

However, a lot of his defensive work goes under the radar.

You won’t find many attackers in world football that can match his physicality and speed, plus he’s got the energy to get up and down the flank from a wing-back role for 90 minutes.

Chelsea fans have been treated to a few brilliant moments this season where he bulldozes his way past players, too.

Chelsea core can stay together

Of course, there are some senior faces in the Blues dressing room that won’t be around foerver.

However, the nucleus of this squad is made up of youngsters, including several to come out of the academy.

It’s going to be exciting to see the journey they go on.
