'Tackling has been excellent': Pat Nevin singles out Chelsea player's display in 1-0 win vs Everton

Pat Nevin singled out Kalidou Koulibaly for huge praise after his eye-catching Chelsea debut against Everton on Saturday evening.

The Blues kickstarted their Premier League season today with three points, winning 1-0 on their trip to Goodison Park.

It wasn’t the liveliest of encounters on Merseyside, but Thomas Tuchel’s side secured a league victory on a ground that’s historically been difficult to visit.

Jorginho’s converted spot-kick on the stroke of half time was enough to get Chelsea off to a perfect start.

Koulibaly against Everton

Koulibaly, along with Raheem Sterling and Marc Cucurella, made completive debuts for Chelsea in the weekend’s game.

BBC pundit Nevin was particularly impressed with the performance of new centre-back Koulibaly during the first half.

The 31-year-old defender looked extremely assured during his first taste of English football before coming off in the 75th minute with what looked like cramp.

“Chelsea fans were worried about losing Antonio Rudiger. They’ve got Rudiger mark II, haven’t they?” Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live (6:21pm, 6 August).

“Different players but Kalidou Koulibaly’s tackling has been excellent.”

£33m bargain

There’s been some eyebrows raised from the footballing world by Chelsea’s spending so far in the transfer window, but it looks like they’ve pulled out off an excellent piece of business.

Koulibaly, who consistently performed at such a high level during eight years at Napoli, looked unfazed on his Premier League debut.

He’s going to be a £33million bargain for the Blues based off a small sample size.

It’s a different kind of challenge for him to adapt to the Premier League, but he’s got all the physical attributes to be a key player in this XI.

He said recently that he’d have to play faster in the Premier League. Well, he’s off to a great start.
