‘That’s where they need’: Rio Ferdinand suggests Liverpool would improve if they had £30m Chelsea player

Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool’s midfield is currently missing a player like N’Golo Kante.

Speaking on his own YouTube channel, Ferdinand proposed the idea of Jurgen Klopp benefiting from the Chelsea star.

N’Golo is going through the motions

There aren’t many midfields in the world that the France international wouldn’t improve.

Although his powers might have faded since the days of consecutive Premier League titles with Leicester City and Chelsea, Kante at maximum capacity is a joy to behold.

The 31-year-old’s once bottomless pit of energy has taken a beating by various injuries, partly dousing the fires inside his belly.

He cannot quite spring from fixture to fixture anymore, forcing Thomas Tuchel to take extra caution with the Parisian prince.

Playing Kante twice in a row is sadly becoming something of a rarity, as the seasons of endless running appear to be taking a toll.

But when working at full volume, there are still very few footballers in the world like Chelsea’s number seven.

Opponents are never safe when he is on the field, aware a tackle or interception could be just around the corner.

His game has changed slightly as he’s got older.

Instead of just being the all-encompassing coverer of ground, Kante has sometimes played further upfield, pressing and pinning defences.

This trait is something Ferdinand feels Liverpool are lacking at the moment.

Would Kante improve Liverpool’s midfield?

“I feel like they lack in the real engine room, or they lack being able to push that defence or overload that defence like they would against a team with a back four,” said Stephen Howson on Klopp’s team.

“That’s where they need a Kante,” responded the former Manchester United defender.

“A fit Kante and he’s given the license to get on and jump out of a defensive block, he’s the one player who could cause them problems.”

Liverpool have coped pretty well without Kante since Klopp took over, yet the German would surely jump at the chance of raiding Stamford Bridge for their £30m (BBC) mini-midfielder.

At the moment, he is lacking that type of runner in the midriff of his side.

Jordan Henderson probably comes the closest in terms of work rate, with just that extra bit of aggression.

Thiago glides across the field, whilst Nabi Keita is more attacking and less disciplined than Kante.

Thankfully, Liverpool are running out of time to sign N’Golo at something close to his best.

Better look elsewhere, Jurgen.
