'There is no chance': Paul Merson says what's guaranteed about Abramovich's eventual replacement at Chelsea

Paul Merson insists Roman Abramovich’s replacement at Chelsea has “no chance” of having the same kind of impact as him.

Blues supporters are currently refreshing online feeds every few minutes to try find updates on a possible takeover, after Chelsea owner Abramovich announced his plans to sell the club.

It’s now a waiting game to see which investors come forward with a strong enough bid to convince the Russian tycoon to sell.

Muhsin Bayra has apparently already made an offer. In addition, Hansjorg Wyss and Todd Boehly are reportedly at the head of a joint-move that may arrive for the club.

Regardless, Merson says it’s an impossible task for Abramovich’s successor.

“Roman Abramovich has been amazing for Chelsea and there is no chance of the next owner having the same impact,” Merson wrote for the Daily Star.

“He took that club from nowhere and now they’re club champions of the world. They’ve won everything under him.

“I don’t know what comes next now for Chelsea. Whoever buys the club knows he’s desperate to sell and won’t give him what he wants for it.

“Arsenal have big owners. But they don’t pay £90m for players. Not many owners want to do that – even Abramovich was making do selling to buy the last few years.”

New Chelsea era

For certain, it’s alien territory for a lot the club’s younger fans that have never experienced pre-Abramovich.

One of the big questions is whether a new owner will allow the Blues to shop in the top tier of the transfer market each summer with elite signings.

The signings of Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku in the last couple of seasons highlights the fact Abramovich was still keen to invest in the squad, which is why it’s been such a dominant 19-year period with him.

Everything on the pitch is on more than safe hands with brilliant manager Thomas Tuchel. Hopefully, the high standards off the pitch and within the club’s hierarchy matches that moving forward.
