Reece James was left on the bench for Chelsea’s Premier League game at the weekend, so he must have been delighted in midweek to deliver a quality display in the cup.
James featured in all three Premier League games to start the new season, however, hasn’t played in the two most recent ones. First of all, he missed Aston Villa with a red card suspension. He then sat on the bench for the 3-0 win against Tottenham last weekend.
The 21-year-old defender was back into the XI on Wednesday night when the Blues faced Villa in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Fortunately, he delivered the kind of performance that should have him in contention to be in the line-up against Manchester City this Saturday.
WhoScored.com named James as the highest rated Chelsea player from last night’s cup win. He ended up with an impressive 9.00 match rating.
The England international made the most interceptions in the Chelsea side (5). Also, he made more passes (100) than anyone else on the pitch. In addition, he made the most amount of accurate crosses (2), and the most accurate long balls for his team(6).
James pretty much dominated the individual statistics, which isn’t surprising after watching him action. He showed his versatility to shine as a right-sided centre-back in a back-three.
His performance included an assist for Timo Werner’s goal in the second half, a goal-line clearance, as well as the winning spot-kick after the game had gone the distance to penalties.
Alan Shearer described him as “excellent” last month and he should be back in the league XI based off last night.
