Charlton fans react to signing Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen on loan
Chelsea teenager Ian Maatsen has completed a loan move to English League One club Charlton Athletic – and some of of their fans on Twitter are over the moon with the signing.
Maatsen has moved across London on a season-long loan and it’s his first spell away from Stamford Bridge to try help his development.
The 18-year-old is a highly-rated defender that will be hoping to make a strong impact during his loan with a Charlton side who are currently in League One, but will have big ambitions to bounce straight back to the Championship with promotion.
He made his senior Blues debut back in September 2019 against Grimsby Town, but has mainly been with the club’s youth team and the club have decided to loan him out.
Maatsen is a versatile youngster that can play several positions, but is mainly recognised as a speedy left-back that likes to fly forward into attack and he’s got great delivery.
The left-footed Dutchman certainly needs a loan spell at this stage in his career if it’s going to take off and he can take encouragement from current first teamers such as Mason Mount, Reece James and Tammy Abraham to follow that path.
A selection of Charlton fans are excited about taking another Chelsea player on loan, as they previously had big success when they took full-back Jay DaSilva on loan from the Blues.
The 22-year-old left the Blues on a permanent basis last year to join Bristol City, but he really made a name for himself during his stint at Charlton.
