Chelsea are now out of the race to sign Matheus Franca from Flamengo as Crystal Palace close in on the Brazilian wonderkid.

That is according to Torcedores.

So, what is the latest on Matheus Franca and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, it was Fabrizio Romano who claimed that Chelsea were seriously interesting in signing the 19-year-old after pinching another talent from South America in Angelo Gabriel, who recently joined from Santos.

The reliable Italian journalist added that Franca was keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, but also showed a willingness to join Crystal Palace as the south Londoners plan to use him immediately, whereas Chelsea intended to loan him to Strasbourg.

Now, that seems to be the difference maker, as Crystal Palace close in on the teenager – who South American football expert Tim Vickery said is “strong on the ball” when speaking to Sky Sports.

Torcedores believe the Eagles have agreed a €30m (£26m) fee with Flamengo, and only a few details are missing until the deal is made official.

The Brazilian news outlet specifically states that Chelsea are no longer in contention to sign Franca after Crystal Palace made serious progress on the deal.

Matheus Franca to Crystal Palace should not bother Chelsea

While it would have been nice for Todd Boehly to secure another bright talent for Chelsea, that should not be what the Blues are focusing on right now.

The squad Mauricio Pochettino has taken to the United States on tour for pre-season is wafer thin, with reinforcements needed in midfield, in attack and also in the centre-back department after Wesley Fofana ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

Chelsea could also do with an upgrade on Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Therefore, saving the £26m which would have been spent on Franca, someone who was not going to be involved in first-team duties at Chelsea anyway, could be a blessing in disguise, as that sum can now be spent on senior additions.
