Although Chelsea have had an excellent start to the season, there are still question marks surrounding their defence.

Antonio Rudiger has looked solid but David Luiz is error prone – although he put in a man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool.

With rumours circulating that Manchester United and Tottenham are interesting in signing former Blue Nathan Ake, Chelsea should consider bringing him back.

Ake left Stamford Bridge for Bournemouth last summer for £20m, citing a lack of opportunities as the reason.

And under Eddie Howe, Ake has blossomed into a top-level centre-back, putting in a string of man-of-the-match displays this season.

As a result, he has become a staple of the Netherlands national squad, despite stiff competition.

And the Dutchman could be exactly what Maurizio Sarri is looking for to solidify his defence.

He shows poise and composure on the ball – a necessity for Sarri’s philosophy – whilst remaining strong and robust in the tackle.

Chelsea have surprised many with their displays this season, with suggestions arising that they could challenge for the title.

But for them to do that, they’ll have to become more solid defensively, which hints that Ake could return.

And Chelsea made sure to insert a buy-back clause into Ake’s contact at Bournemouth.

So if Sarri wants to elevate his teams performances, he’ll need to fight of interest from other top six clubs to get Ake’s signature.
