Fabrizio Romano claims Chelsea set to make decision on 19-year-old ahead of possible new signings

Chelsea will soon make a decision over the future of young defender Levi Colwill amid interest from a number of clubs and their plans to sign new centre-backs this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 19-year-old is expected to take part in Chelsea’s pre-season under Thomas Tuchel following a successful loan spell at Championship side Huddersfield Town last season.

His loan at Huddersfield, unfortunately, ended with a narrow defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Championship play-off final due to his own goal, but overall, he played a crucial role in their reaching that stage in the first place.

While Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen’s departures should benefit Colwill’s hopes of breaking into the first-team, the club’s being in the market for new defenders could also block his path.

Romano claims that Colwill has attracted from several clubs, and Chelsea will soon decide whether to keep the defender or sell him and possibly raise funds for new signings.

“Chelsea will sign two centre-backs this summer but will also make a final decision on Levi Colwill,” the Italian transfer expert wrote on Twitter.

“Multiple clubs are interested in signing the English centre-back on a permanent deal.”

Romano mentioned Leicester City, Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Nottingham Forest among clubs interested in Colwill.

Colwill is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2025, so Chelsea are not exactly under pressure to cash in on him this summer.

Ideally, Tuchel should be given an opportunity to assess the academy graduate next month before making any decision on the player’s future.

Bear in mind, Chelsea might lose more defenders this summer, including Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso who have been linked to Barcelona, as well as Malang Sarr who was close to leaving on loan in January.

This means there could be more first-team spots available for Colwill to fill in the next months.
