Laurence Stewart is said to be a huge fan of Axel Disasi – with the French defender now close to joining Chelsea.

That is according to Nathan Gissing – writing on Gianluca Di Marzio’s website.

So, what is the latest on Axel Disasi and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, it is said that Stewart – Technical Director at Stamford Bridge – loves the France international, and first began talks to sign him from Monaco back in April.

Now – according to Fabrizio Romano – Disasi has undergone a medical at Chelsea ahead of a £38m move to west London, with an official announcement expected to be made soon.

Stewart actually used to work for Monaco from 2020 to 2023, before Todd Boehly hired him to oversee a rebuild at Chelsea.

It was the 37-year-old who signed Disasi for Monaco from Reims in August 2020 shortly after starting work with the Ligue 1 side.

Therefore, Stewart surely knows a huge amount of information about the 25-year-old, and it speaks volumes that he feels the central defender is now good enough to play for Chelsea.

Fans will always have their say on transfers, and whether they agree or not, but when someone like Stewart has clearly done their homework on a player to this extent, it’s hard not to get behind the deal.

Axel Disasi has an immediate fight on his hands at Chelsea

It will be interesting to see if Mauricio Pochettino throws Disasi straight into his starting XI, given the other central defenders in the Argentine’s squad.

Chelsea can pick from Levi Colwill, Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah to fill two positions in the centre of defence, as the South American typically lines up with a standard back four.

Wesley Fofana is also at Stamford Bridge, but could miss the entire 2023/24 campaign due to a ruptured knee ligament.

Therefore, Disasi will need to make a very strong first impression on Pochettino, if he is to work his way into the starting XI.
