Report: Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone considers Chelsea player his preferred summer target

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone sees Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso as one of his ideal summer transfer targets, according to Marca.

The report claims that Simeone has had problems with his left-back options at Wanda Metropolitano since Filipe Luis and Lucas Hernandez’s departures, and therefore will look to strengthen in this area in the summer.

Alonso, whose contract with Chelsea expires in summer 2023, is reportedly Simeone’s preferred target in this position.

Chelsea are unlikely to offer him big contracts, and according to Marca, the 31-year-old will be happy to return to Spain.

Alonso was born and grew up in Madrid, and his father used to play for Atletico.

Other left-back options for Chelsea

From Chelsea’s perspective, however, selling Alonso this summer would be a risky move.

Ben Chilwell, who is still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, is expected to return next season but may still miss the first few games of the campaign.

Kenedy was recalled from his loan at Flamengo to be a backup left wing-back does not seem to have impressed Tuchel given his lack of minutes so far.

On the other hand, Emerson Palmieri is currently on a season-long loan at Lyon and may return to London in the summer, but the French club has the option to sign him permanently.

The Blues have an exciting young left-back talent in Ian Maatsen, who has been playing as a left wing-back at loan club Coventry City. The 20-year-old, however, still lacks experience at the top level.

Obviously, Chelsea can always sign a new left-back if they decide to sell Alonso, but rather than a player who will likely need time to adapt, what they would need is someone reliable to provide cover until Chilwell is back to his best.
