Report: ‘Brilliant’ 20-year-old Chelsea prospect could now head to Holland, after award winning season last year
Dutch side Feyenoord are reportedly interested in trying to sign Chelsea prospect Ian Maatsen this summer.
According to Voetbal International, Feyenoord have set their sights on taking the 20-year-old to Holland and see him as an “attractive” option.
The report explains the young defender was previously in Feyenoord’s academy, so they’re now keen on reuniting with him next season.
With the Eredivisie side in the transfer market for a new left-back, they’ve turned their attention to Chelsea-owned talent Maatsen.
The attack-minded full-back enjoyed an impressive 2021/22 season out on loan away from Stamford Bridge, making 41 appearances across all competitions for Championship side Coventry City. In fact, he even won Coventry’s award for their young player of the year for the last campaign.
Feyenoord interested in Ian Maatsen
Maatsen, 20, may get the opportunity to return his homeland with top-flight Dutch club Feyenoord.
Described as “brilliant” by Coventry boss Mark Robins, his reputation has definitely been boosted from his last nine months as a key player in the Coventry XI.
Back in January, CIES Football Observatory named him one of the top 20 young full-backs playing outside Europe’s top five divisions.
He returns to Chelsea this summer for pre-season with two years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge, so it’ll be interesting to see how much it would cost to sign him.
