Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has reportedly agreed to join Atletico Madrid.
According to Marca, the 28-year-old has agreed to join the La Liga giants this summer and contact was first made two months ago.
It is understood that the Spaniard has given the green light to return to his homeland, after he was left out of the team in favour of Emerson Palmieri in the Europa League final.
But the report details it won’t be easy for Atletico to strike a deal with Chelsea, with the possible transfer ban looming.
The Blues need to decide whether they can allow the left-back to exit and he currently has a deal that doesn’t expire until 2023.
Chelsea signed Alonso for £24million (Sky Sports) and he was excellent as a left wing-back during his debut season, as the team won the Premier League title in the 2016/17 campaign.
He’s not quite managed to hit the same heights in the last two years and has looked uncomfortable in a back four under Maurizio Sarri.
The full-back has been great going forward this season with four goals and seven assists in 39 games, but ultimately his defending lets him down.
Chelsea should look to use Emerson and rising star Jay Dasilva at left-back next season, if they can agree a deal with Atletico for Alonso’s exit.
