Report: Chelsea now interested in 23-year-old goalscorer who 'has no weaknesses'

The January transfer window hasn’t even opened for business yet and Chelsea are already being reportedly standing in line to buy some goods.

Their latest item on the shopping list is RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, if Foot Mercato’s recent report is to be believed.

Foot Mercato claim the Blues, Manchester City and Real Madrid are keeping Nkunku within touching distance.

Nkunku counting the goals

It’s no surprise City want to hold the Frenchman at arm’s length.

His hattrick against Pep Guardiola’s men on matchday one in the Champions League helped conjure a thrilling 6-3 victory in favour of the English side.

In fact, the Leipzig forward has made a habit out of being involved in high-scoring affairs this season.

He bagged a brace in the 6-0 thrashing of Hertha Berlin, then another double the following week where VFL Bochum were put to the sword 3-0.

A goal and an assist arrived in the 4-0 DFB-Pokal walkover of SV Sandhausen, whilst a singular strike wasn’t enough to overcome Club Brugge in Europe.

“Christopher has no weaknesses,” said Leipzig manager Jesse March ahead of the Brugge tie.

If you’ve been counting, Nkunku’s tally for the term stands at nine.

That is already two more than the 23-year-old managed in the entirety of 2020/21.

Admittedly, he was more a provider for Leipzig before – 11 assists in 40 matches – but he has clearly added another string to his attacking bow.

Chelsea matters

Chelsea could certainly benefit from a creative player who knows where the net is.

As it stands, no member of Thomas Tuchel’s squad has broken the five goals and assists barrier this year.

However, do the Blues really need Nkunku?

At first glance at the class of 2021/22, the immediate answer is no.

Stamford Bridge is stocked to the rafters with quality, even if some of the members are falling below their expected levels.

But with any Chelsea dealings, always keep an eye out for the unexpected.
