Chelsea manager Frank Lampard reportedly plans to make Thiago Silva his new captain ahead of Cesar Azpilicueta as the centre-back reportedly closes in on joining the Blues.
According to a report from Sky Sports, the 35-year-old is due to undergo a Chelsea medical tomorrow, August 28, after an agreement between him and the club on a potential free transfer.
Silva is a well-known leader who captained Paris Saint-Germain to this season’s Champions League final although they fell short of European glory.
And according to a report from Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, despite ending his stint at Parc des Princes, Silva could continue his captaincy status at Stamford Bridge.
The report claimed that Chelsea boss Lampard could ask Silva to wear the armband for the 2020/21 season, taking it from Azpilicueta.
This, unsurprisingly, has sparked some debate among some Chelsea fans.
Azpilicueta is a beloved figured among the fans and some of these fans are against giving the armband to a potential newcomer ahead of the Spain international who has been at the club since 2012.
While those in support of the idea of giving Silva the captaincy if he were to join, believe the Brazil international would be a more vocal leader on the pitch.
Leaving sentiment at front door. Thiago Silva should be made captain with Azpilicueta moving to vice. It's no disrespect to our Spaniard. But this team has less leadership than Billy Ray Cyrus had over Hannah Montana. Let's get our Chelsea back.

As much as I love the fact we have signed Thiago Silva, I find it ludicrous to talk about stripping the captaincy away from Azpi & giving it to Thiago.
Azpi's the epitome of everything that is great about our club. His passion/desire/dedication is unmatched.
Still my captain! pic.twitter.com/u84gwgjTpL

Yes, Thiago Silva is older and more experienced, but Azpilicueta is a great leader and he bleeds blue
John Terry started as Vice to Ranieri, Thiago should be made vice too, he can get the captain band when Azpi is not on pitch or when he leaves Chelsea.

The captaincy debate with Thiago Silva joining.
César Azpilicueta is the Chelsea Club captain.
Worth highlighting the role comes with extra responsibilities eg attending PL & referees meetings.
Yes Silva can be the dressing room leader as VC, but I reckon Azpi will remain captain pic.twitter.com/poi8A0YnYp

If Lampard has asked Thiago Silva to be captain, it means Azpilicueta won't be a starter next season. I don't see how Azpilicueta will play every game with Silva as captain. Just don't see it, it's not right and Lampard knows it.

No way Chelsea will scrap Azpi’s armband until he remains at Chelsea. It will be total disrespect to him and that’s not happening. Thiago Silva will probably be made new vice captain in my opinion. pic.twitter.com/QpaCHJSD6P
