There was no hiding away from the fact that defender Kurt Zouma endured a nightmare return to the Chelsea team at the weekend, as he was a poor performer in the 4-0 away defeat to Manchester United.

Zouma partnered Andreas Christensen at centre-back and had a torrid time at Old Trafford, where he gave away a penalty with a poor foul and looked clumsy in possession.

The 24-year-old is back at Stamford Bridge in first-team contention this campaign and would have wished for a better start.

But Chelsea face Liverpool on Wednesday night in Istanbul in the UEFA Super Cup, as the Europa League winners face the Champions League winners from last season.

The Blues could be in for an extremely tough match against Champions League holders Liverpool, who have been transformed by their manager Jurgen Klopp into an elite them.

Their attacker of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are certainly one of the fiercest attacks.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard may have no choice but to throw Zouma back into the deep end against them and it could be beneficial for him.

The France international proved out on loan with Everton last season that he’s capable of top performances and a positive display against Liverpool will quickly make him forget about the weekend.

He needs to be more clinical in possession with better decision and he’s got the pace defensively that will be a major help.

With Antonio Rudiger edging back to fitness, it’s vital Zouma impresses against Liverpool and shows he’s capable of being a regular starter.

It may be the perfect fixture for Zouma to show Lampard he can make the step up.
