Chelsea beat Red Bull Salzburg 5-3 in a pre-season match on Wednesday – and some of the Blues fans picked out defender Emerson Palmieri for his impressive display.

The Blues saw new summer signing Christian Pulisic score two brilliant goals to boost his confidence, while Ross Barkley netted from the spot too in the first-half.

Meanwhile, Pedro’s outrageous flicked volley will be a goal remembered for a long time and striker Michy Batshuayi added a fifth after some perseverance in the box.

Emerson received a wave of support on social media following his display and he left the field on 74 minutes with the scoreline at 4-1.

The Italy international showed what a great athlete he is at left-back, as he supported attacks well and always offered an outlet.

He also looked arguably the most switched on defender with his back to goal and looks extremely comfortable at full-back.

Emerson will be hoping he can force his way into Frank Lampard’s best XI and some fans are convinced that he’s done enough during pre-season to do that.

His main competition comes from teammate Marcos Alonso and Maurizio Sarri opted to rotate between the pair last season.

Emerson certainly has the edge when it comes to defending his own goal, but Alonso previously showed his attacking qualities when playing as a left wing-back during a title-winning season.

Lampard has had a great opportunity to check on his full-back options and it’s Emerson that should got the nod as an overall package at the beginning of the season.
