Chelsea have reportedly joined the race to sign promising Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare. The 20-year-old has impressed in his 17 Ligue 1 appearances this season, as well as catching the eye in his sides Champions League campaign.
Sky Sports News have reported that Chelsea have joined Manchester United and Arsenal in the race for his signature. Soumare was signed by Lille on a free from Paris Saint Germain in 2017 and the club could be set to make a substantial profit.
The French club are ready to let the France U-21 international go in January despite the two and a half years remaining on his contract.
Soumare has made four appearances for the French youth side and will have half a mind on next summers European Championships. If he makes a move to one of the aforementioned Premier League clubs and continues putting in impressive performances, he could be in Didier Deschamps thinking.
The Lille star is considered a box-to-box midfielder, similar in style to Paul Pogba. Chelsea currently have an abundance of midfield options, but Soumare could be seen as a long term replacement for N’Golo Kante.
The 28-year-old World Cup winner has been linked with a move away from Chelsea. The Daily Mail has reported that he could seek a new challenge in the summer.
The Blues should look to bring Soumare in this month to learn from Kante. If he can become even close to the player Kante is, Chelsea will have a serious talent on their hands.
