Callum Hudson-Odoi has come under some criticism following a disappointing performance for England in his second start for the Three Lions, but here is why Chelsea fans should not worry about the youngster and his current performance.
It is so easy to forget that CHO is just 19, and having recently returned from a long term Achilles injury, it is harsh to expect too much from the winger. There is no doubting his talent, and potential, but fans of Chelsea and otherwise must be patient with him.
Pundits and fans alike criticized Hudson-Odoi for giving the ball away too frequently and playing it safely too often in the 4-0 win over Kosovo and was subsequently replaced in the second half by goal-scorer Marcus Rashford.
When recovering from a long-term injury like Hudson-Odoi has done, it can take weeks or even months to regain the sharpness and confidence that was on show before the setback. These issues can be more prevalent in a young player who is yet to have an extended period in the Chelsea side.
In just five starts across all competitions for the Blues this season, Hudson-Odoi has scored one goal and provided four assists for his teammates. These statistics are impressive when you consider the above, and once he regains his confidence and gets a run in the side, it is fair to expect big things from CHO.
However, expecting too much too soon can have detrimental impacts on a player’s performance. Be patient with Hudson-Odoi, and remember he is still just 19. The talent is there, the performances will come, it is only a matter of time.
