Links to connecting Chelsea to Atletico Mineiro right-back Emerson should be cast aside in favour of Reece James

Despite his success under Antonio Conte as a centre-back, Cesar Azpilicueta has looked uncomfortable as a right-back this season.

Because of his struggles, people have been wondering who Chelsea’s long-term right-back will be.

Although Azpilicueta is only 29, he looks on the downhill slope and Davide Zappacosta is on the way out.

And as a result, links connecting Chelsea with a move for Atletico Mineiro youngster Emerson have surfaced.

Emerson is a 19-year-old right-back who still plays in his homeland of Brazil.

He’s played just 19 times for the senior Atletico Mineiro side and has already been capped for Brazil’s Under-20 side.

While he may be an attractive prospect to many, Chelsea should instead keep their wallet in their pocket and focus on their own young right-back, Reece James.

James is on loan at Wigan Athletic in the Championship and is their regular starting right-back.

He’s only 18-years-old but has developed a huge amount whilst at Wigan, and is showing the kind of form that might catch Chelsea’s eye.

Not only would it save Chelsea money, but fans have been calling for them to focus on their academy players for a while now.

And with the strong crop of youngsters coming through at the moment, they have the perfect opportunity to do so.

Therefore, Chelsea should finally put their foot down and decide that James is their future right-back, not Emerson.
