Chelsea Squad

The Chelsea first-team squad for the 2022/23 season had 44 players at caretaker manager Frank Lampard’s disposal at Stamford Bridge. The Premier League outfit’s squad featured six goalkeepers, 16 defenders, 10 midfielders and 12 forwards, including all players out on loan.

Chelsea goalkeepers

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga in a world-record transfer for a goalkeeper in August 2018 from Athletic Bilbao. The Blues paid £71m for the Spaniard, who has played over 155 games.

Marcus Bettinelli

Marcus Bettinelli switched Fulham for Chelsea in July 2021 after seeing out his contract with the Cottagers. He made his Blues debut against Chesterfield in the FA Cup in January 2022.

Edouard Mendy

Chelsea paid Stade Rennais £22m to get Edouard Mendy in September 2020. He helped the Blues add the Champions League to Chelsea’s trophy cabinet in the Senegal star’s first term.

Gabriel Slonina

Chelsea snapped up Gabriel Slonina in August 2022 in a £12m transfer before loaning the goalkeeper back to Chicago Fire. The American arrived at Stamford Bridge in January 2023.

Nathan Baxter (on loan to Hull City)

Nathan Baxter first entered Chelsea’s academy aged just eight. He rose through their ranks before sealing several loan deals, including to Hull City for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 terms.

Jamie Cumming (on loan to MK Dons)

Frank Lampard brought Jamie Cumming into Chelsea’s first-team squad in 2019 having been in their youth ranks since Under-8 level. He has since furthered his experience away on loan.

Chelsea defenders

Benoit Badiashile

Monaco sold Benoit Badiashile to Chelsea in January 2023 for £35m. The defender arrived in west London on a seven-and-a-half-year deal after his France debut in September 2022.

Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva signed for Chelsea for free in 2020 after the Brazilian left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract. He has since played a pivotal role in the defence at Stamford Bridge.

Trevoh Chalobah

Chelsea awarded Trevor Chalobah his first professional contract in 2016. The defender had been a part of their youth fold since U9 level and made his first-team debut in August 2021.

Ben Chilwell

Leicester sold one of their prized assets in Ben Chilwell to Chelsea for £50m in August 2020. The defender made his debut for the Blues against Barnsley in the EFL Cup that September.

Reece James

Reece James signed his first professional contract with Chelsea in March 2017 after 11 years in their academy. He has since appeared in more than 145 first-team fixtures with the Blues.

Kalidou Koulibaly

Chelsea paid Napoli £33m to sign one of the best defenders in Serie A, Kalidou Koulibaly, in July 2022. The Senegal enforcer had long been a target of Premier League clubs in the past.

Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta left Marseille to join Chelsea in August 2012 for £6.5m. The Spaniard later took over their captaincy from Gary Cahill in 2019 and has registered over 500 appearances.

Marc Cucurella

Chelsea edged out interest from Manchester City to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton for £63m in 2022. The Spaniard had only joined the Seagulls from Getafe in 2021 for £15.5m.

Wesley Fofana

Wesley Fofana left Leicester for Chelsea in August 2022 in a £75m transfer. The Frenchman had played just 12 times in 2021/22 after suffering a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle.

Malang Sarr (on loan to AS Monaco)

Chelsea leapt on Malang Sarr leaving Nice in 2020 to sign a highly-rated French talent. He has since enjoyed loan spells with Porto and Monaco around his outings at Stamford Bridge.

Ethan Ampadu (on loan to Spezia Calcio)

Ethan Ampadu caught Chelsea’s eye at Exeter City after coming through the Grecians’ youth ranks. He has since enjoyed loan spells at RB Leipzig, Sheffield United, Venezia and Spezia.

Levi Colwill (on loan to Brighton & Hove Albion)

Chelsea gave Levi Colwill his first professional contract on his 17th birthday in 2020. He had been a part of their youth ranks since U9 level and has spent time on loan with Huddersfield and Brighton since. He moved to the Seagulls as part of the Blues’ swoop for Marc Cucurella.

Malo Gusto (on loan to Lyon)

Chelsea signed Malo Gusto from Lyon for £31m in January 2023. The Blues also agreed to let the young right-back return to Les Gones on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 term.

Ian Maatsen (on loan to Burnley)

Chelsea raided the academy ranks at PSV Eindhoven to sign Ian Maatsen in 2018. The left-back has since enjoyed loan spells with Charlton, Coventry and Burnley to gain experience.

Baba Rahman (on loan to Reading)

Baba Rahman joined Chelsea from Augsburg in a £20m deal in August 2015. Yet the Ghana defender has seldom featured for the Blues between loan spells with Schalke, Stade Reims, Mallorca and PAOK Salonika. Rahman has also been on loan to Reading since August 2021.

Dujon Sterling (on loan to Stoke City)

Chelsea handed Dujon Sterling his first professional contract in October 2016. The defender joined the club aged eight and has since had spells at Coventry, Wigan, Blackpool and Stoke.

Chelsea midfielders

Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea paid Benfica a British record £107m for Enzo Fernandez in January 2023. He had just won the World Cup with Argentina and took the Young Player of the Tournament award.

N’Golo Kante

N’Golo Kante joined Chelsea from Leicester on the back of winning the Premier League for £30m. The midfielder would help the Blues claim the top-flight title in his debut campaign.

Mateo Kovacic

Chelsea initially hired Mateo Kovacic on loan from Real Madrid in 2018. The Blues later paid £40m to retain the Croatian in July 2019. He helped the Blues win the Champions League in 2020/21 for the midfielder’s fourth winners’ medal following three titles with the Galacticos.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been with Chelsea since U8 level and joined the first-team squad in December 2014. Jose Mourinho also gave the versatile midfielder his first-team debut in the Champions League against Sporting Lisbon. He has since featured in over 149 senior games.

Mason Mount

Mason Mount joined Chelsea’s academy aged six and has progressed to play in more than 190 first-team fixtures. Frank Lampard awarded the midfielder his senior Blues debut after having the England international on loan with Derby. He has also spent time with Vitesse.

Denis Zakaria (on loan from Juventus)

Juventus sent Denis Zakaria on loan to Chelsea with a £30m option to buy in 2022. He had only arrived in Turin from Borussia Monchengladbach that January with a solid reputation.

Conor Gallagher

Chelsea locked down Conor Gallagher as a highly promising prospect in 2018 before going on to hand him their 2018/19 Academy Player of the Year award. The midfielder has since enjoyed loan spells at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom and made his name at Crystal Palace.

Carney Chukwuemeka

Aston Villa sold Carney Chukwuemeka to Chelsea in 2022 for £20m after he turned down a new contract. He also excelled as England won the European U19 Championship in 2022.

Tino Anjorin (on loan to Huddersfield Town)

Tino Anjorin has been with Chelsea since U7 level and signed his first professional contract in 2018. The box-to-box gem has since had loans with Lokomotiv Moscow and Huddersfield.

Tiemoue Bakayoko (on loan to AC Milan)

Chelsea signed Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco for £40m in 2017. But the midfielder could not live up to the figure and has since joined AC Milan (twice), Monaco and Napoli on loan.

Chelsea forwards

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Chelsea brought Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back to England for £12m in September 2022. The striker had only joined Barcelona in January 2022 after Arsenal had paid off his contract.

Christian Pulisic

Christian Pulisic agreed to a £58m move to Chelsea in January 2019 but stayed at Borussia Dortmund until that summer. He has since enjoyed more than 140 appearances for the club.

Joao Felix (on loan from Atletico Madrid)

Atletico Madrid loaned Joao Felix to Chelsea in January 2023 for £9.5m and the Blues also agreed to cover his wages. The forward had joined Los Colchoneros in July 2019 for £113m.

Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea beat out interest from Arsenal to sign Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88.5m in 2023. The Ukraine international had only played 44 senior fixtures at the Miners.

Raheem Sterling

Manchester City sold Raheem Sterling to Chelsea in July 2022 for £47.5m after winning four Premier League titles together. The England star made his Blues bow in a 1-0 win at Everton.

Armando Broja

Armando Broja joined Chelsea’s academy at U9 level and progressed to earn a professional contract in 2020. He would also join Vitesse on loan before making a splash in the Premier League with Southampton. The striker scored six goals in 32 games on loan with the Saints.

Hakim Ziyech

Ajax agreed to sell Hakim Ziyech to Chelsea in the following summer for £33.5m in February 2020. The Moroccan left the Dutch giants after 49 goals and 81 assists in 165 appearances.

David Fofana

David Fofana left Molde for Chelsea in an £11m transfer in January 2023. The forward had emerged as one of Europe’s brightest attacking prospects while with the Norwegian outfit.

Kai Havertz

Chelsea spent £76m to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020. The German had emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s brightest forward talents at Die Werkself. Havertz would mark his debut season with the Blues with the winning goal in the Champions League final.

Noni Madueke

Noni Madueke returned to England at Chelsea in January 2023 in a £29m transfer from PSV Eindhoven. He had earlier played in Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur’s academy sides.

Romelu Lukaku (on loan to Inter Milan)

Romelu Lukaku returned to Chelsea for a then-club record £97.5m in 2021. The forward left the Blues for Everton in 2014 before having spells at Manchester United and Inter Milan. But he struggled to adapt to Thomas Tuchel’s side and re-joined Inter Milan on loan for 2022/23.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (on loan to Bayer Leverkusen)

Callum Hudson-Odoi joined Chelsea at U8 level and reached their first-team squad in 2018 under Antonio Conte. The forward made his senior debut in an FA Cup win over Newcastle United. He has since played in more than 125 games and joined Bayer Leverkusen on loan.
