Report: Some think Chelsea may have just signed their next Reece James or Mason Mount

Those close to Dylan Williams strongly believe he will break into the Chelsea first team in the future.

This is according to The Athletic, who claim the feeling within the teenager’s close circle towards eventually making the senior squad is one of optimism.

Will Cobham do it again?

Williams has certainly joined the right club in terms of creating a career path to the big leagues.

He just needs to read the list of names that have been constructed in the Cobham laboratories to be aware of the fortunes that potentially lie ahead.

Mason Mount, Trevoh Chalobah, Andreas Christensen, Callum Hudson-Odoi Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Tino Livramento, Marc Guehi, Tariq Lamptey, Armando Broja, Billy Gilmour, Conor Gallagher; all have made it to the very top of the footballing pyramid.

Chelsea’s latest signing could easily follow this same pathway if his development is managed correctly.

Who is Dylan Williams?

Although he wasn’t the January recruit every fan expected or wanted, the Blues acquired Williams from Derby County for their long-term project, rather than the here and now.

The 18-year-old started his sporting journey at Wolverhampton Wanderers before joining Derby’s academy.

It wasn’t long before the defender attracted attention from the coaches at higher age groups.

He swiftly moved up to the Under-23s, yet was squeezed into the first-team just as quickly.

Wayne Rooney liked what he saw of the full-back in pre-season last summer and invited him to join the main Rams flock permanently.

Williams played six times for Derby ahead of his transfer to the European champions.

There was some suggestion that Chelsea had landed the left-back to provide cover for Marcos Alonso in the absence of Ben Chilwell.

However, as The Athletic state, the Blues want to keep the new recruit in their youth system until the time is right to promote him once again.

If Williams is fortunate enough to rub shoulders with Thomas Tuchel’s group, he will continue the legacy still being championed by Mount, James, Chalobah, Hudson-Odoi and Christensen.
