The second part of 2019 was a breakout period for Chelsea’s academy graduates. Several young players have made the step into the first team since Lampard has come in. His trust in the club’s youth has finally seen the prestigious Blues academy produce some top talent.

Here are three more youth prospects that could breakthrough in 2020.

Lamptey came on in the second half of Sunday’s win against Arsenal for his Chelsea debut. The 19-year-old produced an impressive display and helped the Blues turn the game around.

He will be fighting for the right-back spot with fellow academy prospect Reece James but has made a great start under Frank Lampard. While James is ruled out with an ankle injury, Lamptey could have the chance to nail down a starting spot in the new year.

Gilmour is the second young prospect who could breakthrough in 2020. The Scottish midfielder has made some first-team appearances and some fans drew comparisons with Jorginho.

His calmness on the ball is well beyond his years, and when the fixture schedule becomes hectic, Gilmour could get a chance to shine. At just 18-years-old, he could learn a lot from being in and around the first-team this season.

Ian Maatsen is the youngest player on this list but could have a real chance of breaking into the first team in 2020. He is just 17-years-old and has already made his debut for the senior team.

The Dutch defender is a left-back by trade and has represented the Netherlands at every youth level up to Under-18’s. If Chelsea fail in their pursuit of Ben Chilwell, Lampard could take a risk and promote Maatsen to the first team.
