Chelsea’s season so far has been full of young talent. Lampard has come in at the helm and developed a new culture at the club. The infamous youth academy the club possess has finally been utilised, with several academy players making their way into the first team.

But who has been Chelsea’s young player of the season so far? It is a tough question. Numerous players could have a case made for them, after some brilliant performances in the first half of the season.

Reece James has forced his way into Lampard’s thinking and is very much on the cusp of regular first-team action. Throw his dramatic last-minute equaliser against Ajax into the mix and you have a real candidate.

Then there is Fikayo Tomori, who has impressed massively. So much so that he recently earned himself a new five-year contract with the club. Another candidate is Mason Mount in midfield, who has scored five goals and provided one assist in a breakout season for the club.

Christian Pulisic also deserves a mention. After struggling to get into the side early in the season, he has since become a nailed-on starter. The winger has registered six goals and three assists for the Blues already and is a young player with a lot of promise.

These are all credible candidates, but one man deserves the title of young player of the season so far more than anyone else. That man is Tammy Abraham. The 22-year-old has 11 Premier League goals in his maiden top-flight season and is looking like a top striker. He has also scored twice in the Champions League and impressed fans with his clever link-up play.

Lampard’s Chelsea side look lost without Abraham on the pitch, and that is the mark of an extremely important asset. Here is to the youth of Chelsea continuing to thrive in 2020.
