Who is Harrison Bettoni? The ‘excellent’ new Chelsea talent Man City wanted

Chelsea have confirmed the arrival of another new signing after Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra, and it comes in the form of teenage midfielder Harrison Bettoni from Wigan.

So far this summer, Chelsea have spent north of £160m on two players in Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra. Now, the Blues have agreed a third summer signing in the form of youngster Bettoni.

Still only 18, Bettoni has been excelling for the Latics in League One over the past 12 months. While he has been signed to boost Chelsea’s second string, Bettoni will certainly have eyes on the senior side.

But beyond Wigan, Bettoni is yet to make his name in footballing terms. So who is the playmaker and what has been said about the Manchester-born star, and just how well did he play for Wigan last season?

Starring for Wigan’s academy, the teenager broke into the Latics’ senior side last season. He has since played 27 times at the first-team level, scoring four goals for Wigan – who finished in 16th position.

Bettoni is tall for an attacking midfielder

While he is a fleet-footed, technically gifted attacking midfielder capable of breaking into the box as a certain Frank Lampard once did, Bettoni also offers an aerial threat. The youngster stands at 6ft 3in.

Wigan boss Rob Lowe described Bettoni as ‘excellent

Latics boss Lowe is a big fan of the player he has helped develop in Lancashire. The teenage talent was part of the side that beat Burton in December 2025, and Lowe heaped praise on his breakthrough ace.

“He’s not only a goalscorer, but he’s a very good footballer. He was excellent in the first half when he was unlucky to hit the post; he’s going to be big for us,” Lowe said, after Paul Mullin scored in the 1-0 win.

The versatility of Bettoni will aid his senior chances

Not only is Bettoni a 10, but the youngster has played off the striker at times given his height and frame. But aside from that, the midfielder has also dropped into the ‘8’ role during his time in a Wigan shirt.

Details of Bettoni’s contract at Chelsea

The Blues were not alone in their pursuit of Bettoni. According to Pete O’Rourke last month, Milan and Man City wanted to sign Bettoni, but now, it appears Chelsea have won the race for the midfielder.

Bettoni has put pen to paper on a contract until the summer of 2030. The midfielder will begin in the academy, but given his taste of first-team football, the chances are he will go on loan this summer.
