Chelsea have been given a home tie in the third round of the Carabao Cup against League Two opposition – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter have reacted by claiming that Billy Gilmour should get his senior debut in the game.

The Blues will face either Grimsby Town or Macclesfield Town at Stamford Bridge in the third round, with the second round fixture still to be replayed since it was abandoned due to heavy rain.

Chelsea managed to avoid any of the top teams in the cup draw and would love to go on to avenge last season, where they lost to Manchester City on penalties at Wembley in the final.

It will be intriguing to see how manager Frank Lampard treats the domestic cup competitions, as on paper they look his best chance to win silverware during his first season in charge.

There were numerous responses from fans begging Lampard to give Billy Gilmour his competitive senior debut against the winner of Grimsby and Macclesfield.

Gilmour is a central midfielder that has been starring in Chelsea’s youth teams in the last couple of years and joined from Rangers in 2017.

The Scotsman impressed around the first-team during pre-season and was part of the bench this campaign for the UEFA Super Cup loss to Liverpool on penalties.

He’s an 18-year-old rising star that plays in a deep-lying playmaker role, where he can dictate play with his passing and control of the ball.
