Marcos Alonso completed 90 minutes in the demolition of Dynamo Kiev on Thursday night – and many Chelsea fans were impressed for once by the defender’s performance.

The 28-year-old left-back has come under huge scrutiny from supporters this campaign for his form and has even seen his spot in the team threatened by teammate Emerson Palmieri.

But Alonso earned a start away to Ukrainian outfit Dynamo Kiev and made the most of his opportunity.

The Blues recorded a 5-0 away victory to book their spot in the Europa League quarter-finals and the draw will take place on Friday.

Olivier Giroud’s hat-trick kept up his stunning form in Europe this campaign, while academy graduate Callum Hudson-Odoi also chalked a goal.

Alonso found himself on the scoresheet with a tap in from close-range and he highlighted his attacking qualities throughout the game.

The Spaniard supplied a stunning assist with a through ball to Giroud and he saw a free-kick tipped onto the woodwork by the goalkeeper.

Alonso is certainly more effective when he’s got the licence to attack and that’s why he flourished against weak opposition.

He’s certainly got a lot more improving to do defensively if he wants to break back into Maurizio Sarri’s main XI, but certainly did himself no harm with a positive display.
