Chelsea fans rave about Emerson Palmieri despite cup final defeat against Manchester City

Chelsea suffered an agonising defeat to Manchester City on Sunday in the Carabao Cup on penalties.

The Blues came up against the same opponents that beat them 6-0 two weeks earlier at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.

Maurizio Sarri’s side delivered a much greater performance in the cup final to restore some pride and the contest went the distance, but ultimately they ended up on the losing side.

The West London club were beaten 4-3 on penalties, as Jorginho and David Luiz missed from the spot.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was unfortunately the villain, as he refused to leave the pitch in the closing stages of extra-time despite Sarri’s wishes.

Many Chelsea fans were delighted with the performance of their defender Emerson Palmieri, who got the nod over teammate Marcos Alonso in the left-back area.

The 24-year-old really impressed on his 17th first-team appearance of the season and has surely done enough to become a regular starter from now.

He managed to deal with the best that was thrown at him from the likes of Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva.

The two-time capped Italy international demonstrated his defensive instincts on numerous occasions and his pace helped him.

Here are some of the Chelsea fan tweets raving about Emerson’s performance:

Graduated from Staffordshire University in 2016, he now writes exclusively for The Chelsea Chronicle covering news, analysis and match coverage. He enjoys the dream position of writing about his boyhood club, which seems to be involved in more drama every single day than an episode of The Bill. Aside from his love for Chelsea, he supports and follows the England cricket team. He also fancies himself as the Sunday League version of Michael Essien.
