Ross Barkley helped England kick off their European Championship qualifying campaign with a 5-0 win over Czech Republic – and many Chelsea fans were thrilled by the international performance of their player.

Gareth Southgate’s side recorded a comfortable victory at Wembley, with Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling stealing the headlines with his hat-trick.

The Three Lions captain Harry Kane was also on the scoresheet with his penalty and there was an own goal from Chelsea loanee Tomas Kalas, in a routine win during the first group stage match.

There was also debuts for Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi and West Ham’s Declan Rice, while Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Jason Sancho also impressed.

Barkley started the game on the bench, but was introduced after only 17 minutes following an injury to Eric Dier.

The 25-year-old more than made the most of his opportunity, as he showed some real bright moments that have been fairly scarce at Stamford Bridge.

He dropped into a central midfield role and several times provided the link up to the front three.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri will hope that Barkley can return after the international break with the same kind of confidence he showed in an England shirt.
