Chelsea fans will love what Karim Benzema did right after full-time last night at the Bernabeu - TCC View
The actions of Real Madrid star Karim Benzema last night should put a smile on the face of Chelsea fans that are still gutted about last night’s result.
Despite a remarkable comeback in the tie, Chelsea were eventually beaten 5-4 on aggregate by Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Thomas Tuchel’s Blues took the contest all the way to extra time after overturning the 3-1 deficit from the first leg, but in-form Madrid striker Benzema eventually scored the winner on Tuesday at the Bernabeu.
Benzema recognises special Chelsea player
It’s been caught on video what Benzema did right after full-time when the players were exiting the field.
The 34-year-old striker, who some fans currently rate as the best player in the world, stopped Chelsea’s Reece James to collect his match shirt.
Blues supporters are going to love the fact Benzema went chasing James to swap shirts.
It may be an old fashioned tradition to some, however, swapping shirts and keeping memorabilia from great opponents still means a lot to plenty of players.
James, 22, was the big name Benzema managed to grab last night.
It was a performance from the England and Chelsea defender that really pressed home to neutrals something that Blues supporters have known for a long time, which is that he’s a special talent operating at the top level.
He played as the right-sided centre-back in a back three, dealing exceptionally well for most of the night with Madrid’s outstanding winger Vinicus Junior. There were times on the ball where the fluent system made him look at right-back, too.
The Chelsea star’s offensive quality is well known with the crosses, goals and assists he can provide when he plays his preferred right wing-back position. However, James stepped up on the biggest stage defensively to impress in Madrid.
You can’t help but feel sorry for England boss Gareth Southgate at this stage, who’s got the likes of James, Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold he can’t cram into the same XI.
