Despite an exciting end to the campaign with an FA Cup final and Champions League game still to play, Chelsea minds will already be looking towards next season and it’s no secret a new left-back should be a priority.
The Blues have been linked with a host of full-backs already, including Everton’s French left-back Lucas Digne.
ESPN claimed at the beginning of July that Chelsea and Manchester City both picked out the 27-year-old as a possible target.
The attack-minded defender has been a major success at Goodison Park since he was signed from Barcelona for £18million (BBC) back in 2018 and is a consistent performer in the Premier League.
Now that the summer window is open Frank Lampard’s side should step up interest in Digne, especially as a fresh report could present an opening.
Sky Sports reports that Everton have made an £18million bid for Real Madrid’s left-back Sergio Reguilon, who has majorly impressed during a loan spell at Sevilla.
The 23-year-old Spaniard is a serious talent that surely wouldn’t move to the Premier League to sit on the bench, which is why Everton’s move for him has to raise question marks about Digne’s future.
Digne is certainly an improvement on the current Chelsea options at left-back, as he’s defensively assured with his back to goal and a set-piece specialist too.
It seems like a perfect opportunity for the Blues to step up interest in the Everton man by making an official approach, as Man City are serious competitions if the player becomes available.
