Jorginho isn’t usually the most pleasing Chelsea player on the eye, but he deserves a special mention for his key contribution in the last week.
Chelsea have booked their spot in the Carabao Cup final by beating Tottenham twice recently in the two-legged semi-final tie. A 2-0 victory last week at Stamford Bridge was followed up last night with a 1-0 away win, handing Thomas Tuchel’s men a comfortable three-goal aggregate advantage.
Jorginho, who started both legs, silently dropped a couple of dominant performances.
The 30-year-old midfielder started alongside Saul Niguez in the first leg before playing next to Mateo Kovacic yesterday.
An incredible statistic from the semi-final tie records that Jorginho had a 100 per cent tackle success over the two legs by making seven out of seven challenges (Who Scored).
There was a lot of emphasis on how several of Jorginho’s teammates performed against Spurs, but he effectively when about his business in impressive style with minimal fuss.
Jorginho remains underrated Chelsea asset
Of course, Jorginho was recognised globally in 2021 after winning the Champions League with Chelsea and the Euros with his country Italy. However, it feels like there is still not enough notice of how important he can be to Thomas Tuchel’s side when he’s in form.
The ball-playing midfielder was exquisite in both results against Spurs in controlling possession, as the opposition players barely laid a glove on him. He can be the real glue in Tuchel’s line-up by orchestrating things in front of the defence.
The Italian is renowned for his vision, composure and range of passing. It’s worth looking at his defensive attributes, too.
His reading of the game means he’s effective in breaking up play and tucks into some great pockets in the middle to help protect the backline.
Finally, the ability he’s got from the penalty spot means fans are confident whenever the Blues receive a spot-kick. Frank Lebouef was recently full of praise for Jorginho’s quality from 12 yards.
