Chelsea have enjoyed tremendous success out of the loan system in recent times, which is why the current situation with their youngster Ethan Ampadu is so frustrating.

The Blues have seen Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, FIkayo Tomori and Reece James all integrated to the first-team squad this season, which has come after the quartet were all developing out on loan in the Championship in the previous campaign.

Ampadu is another highly-rated talent on the books at Stamford Bridge and he’s been in West London since his arrival in 2017 from Exeter City.

The 19-year-old has made 12 senior appearances for Chelsea, but the club decided to send him out on loan this season to improve his game.

He linked up with German side RB Leipzig for the 2019/20 season, which seemed like an exciting opportunity for him back in the summer.

But he’s made just five senior appearances across all competitions this term and mainly been sat on the bench, with his last appearance coming back in December.

Ampadu is already a Wales international with nine senior caps under his belt and it seems a total waste of time sat on the sidelines, as he could be earning regular minutes at so many other clubs.

He is a versatile star that could have a long-term future at centre-back and he’s extremely confident on the ball, but he’s also shown he can slot in as a defensive midfielder too.

Leipzig are in a title race in the Bundesliga and they can’t be blamed for not chucking in the Chelsea loanee, but it’s Frank Lampard’s side plus Ampadu that are really missing out.

He’s going to be playing catch up on some of the other Chelsea young stars at this rate when he returns in the summer and has to hope he’s presented with an opportunity out in Germany.
