Davide Zappacosta showed against Vidi why Chelsea should fear injury

Chelsea eventually edged past Hungarian champions MOL Vidi on Thursday night in the Europa League group stages and a number of fringe players failed to make the most of their chance to play.

Alvaro Morata’s second-half goal handed the Blues a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge and it means they maintain their 100 per cent record in Europe so far this season.

Manager Maurizio Sarri gave a few squad players the opportunity to impress, with highly-rated midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek one of eight players to be drafted into the starting XI.

Davide Zappacosta was another fresh face in the team and his European display proved that Chelsea are just one injury away from serious trouble.

The 26-year-old defender replaced Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back and the pair look a million miles away in terms of quality.

Zappacosta was sloppy throughout against Vidi with his defensive positioning and was caught out a couple of times by a team that surprised many with their performance.

The Italian defender is a speed machine that has the ability to drive forward, but unfortunately his crossing often lets him down and it was wayward on Thursday once again.

It is difficult for him to build up some form due to the amount of time he spends on the bench, but he failed to show any reason as to why he should be starting in the league.

Chelsea would be in some danger if first-choice right-back Azpilcueta was dealt a spell on the sidelines, as back-up option Zappacosta is not a quality replacement in the full-back area and could struggle against better opposition.
