Didier Drogba hails form of Chelsea defender David Luiz
Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has hailed the form of his ex-teammate David Luiz, who is currently a regular in the starting XI at Stamford Bridge.
The 31-year-old won the Champions League alongside Drogba with the Blues and is one of the senior players currently in Maurizio Sarri’s squad.
Luiz has made 38 senior appearances across all competitions this campaign and has impressed with the way he has played out from the back.
The Brazilian has always been extremely comfortable on the ball and some of his long-range passing this campaign has been elite.
But he’s still prone to the odd individual error or lapse in concentration and isn’t getting any younger, which is why teammate Andreas Christensen should be pushing hard for his spot.
Drogba believes that Luiz has been in excellent form this season under Sarri and has explained he will be delighted if he stays in West London.
The centre-back’s contract at Stamford Bridge is due to expire at the end of the season, but they could need him with the possibility of a transfer ban.
“Everyone at the club loves David, but if he stays at the club, I will be happy,” Drogba told Goal.
“He is not only bringing happiness to the club, but he also is now one of the faces of the club, and he is a very good player, he is performing right now, so if it was up to me [I would sign him].”
Luiz has told the Evening Standard that he “thinks” he will be at Chelsea next season and Drogba would clearly be pleased to see his friend extend his stay.
He certainly has a big role in the dressing room as one of the more experienced players and could be useful in helping bring through youngsters.
