Chelsea begin their Premier League season away to Manchester United on Sunday and all eyes will be firmly fixed on who Frank Lampard selects in his team for his first competitive match in charge.
The new Blues head coach has the Stamford Bridge faithful behind him, but it looks like there are still plenty of decisions to make on the pitch.
Ross Barkley or Mason Mount in the playmaker role is an obvious dilemma, while it’s unclear on who will be the starting striker with all three options getting opportunities in pre-season.
But perhaps the most crucial decision against Manchester United will come in defence, where the centre-backs will need to be on top of their game against the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Marital.
David Luiz looks a nailed-on starter for Chelsea given his experience, but senior defender Antonio Rudiger is currently sidelined through injury.
It’s left the door wide open for another to force his way into Lampard’s plans, with Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen in pole position to take one of the spots next to Luiz.
But one of the pair may be left bitterly disappointed on opening day if they are left on the bench against Manchester United.
Zouma has returned to West London after an excellent loan spell with Everton last season and it looks like he’s now back in first-team contention with the Blues.
The 24-year-old has recovered from his long-term knee injury to rediscover his best form and Lampard’s checked on him in pre-season.
He’s a French colossus that is a monster in defence with his pace and power, which is why he’s firmly put himself into contention to nail a permanent spot in the team.
But Dane Christensen is a major rival to him and he’s another that has got an opportunity in pre-season.
The 23-year-old was with the Blues last season and he partnered Luiz during the 4-1 win over Arsenal in the Europa League final.
