Romelu Lukaku’s weekend performance against Arsenal understandably stole the Chelsea headlines, but an under the radar display from Marcos Alonso deserves significant credit.

Firstly, centre-forward Lukaku marked his return to the club by scoring the opener in a 2-0 away win at Arsenal in the Premier League.

In addition, defender Reece James received plenty of plaudits for scoring and assisting at the Emirates Stadium.

However, James’ wing-back partner put in yet another impressive contribution.

Alonso, 30, has started all three of the club’s opening games of the season. He played in the UEFA Super Cup final win, along with the two league matches.

The Spanish left wing-back is keeping Ben Chilwell watching on from the sidelines, which shows the kind of impact he’s having in Thomas Tuchel’s XI right now.

Marcos Alonso delivers under the radar Sunday performance

Alonso scored in the opening league win against Crystal Palace, but his weekend effort against Arsenal was just as impressive.

According to football data website Who Scored, the full-back ended up with the most interceptions on the Chelsea team against Arsenal (four). The next best in that stat for the Blues was skipper Cesar Azpilicueta (two).

Also, he had the most in the Chelsea side for key passes (five).

He attempted four cross, had 46 passes and made three clearances, too.

His all-action display saw him contribute in both halves of the pitch in the London derby and he’s showing why he’s so well suited in a 3-4-3 formation.

It looks impossible for Tuchel to bring Chilwell into the XI right now.

Alonso’s defensive vulnerability has not existed in the past couple of weeks, plus his offensive game is flourishing.
