Should Chelsea fans be concerned about David Luiz ahead of Manchester United?

Chelsea defender David Luiz has to be one of the biggest success stories so far under manager Maurizio Sarri, as he’s returned from the cold to become a vital player.

The 31-year-old Brazilian has played in every minute of the Premier League campaign so far and his quality in possession is making him thrive in Sarri’s system.

He is a ball-playing centre-back that has an exquisite range of passing and has demonstrated that on numerous occasions in the recent months.

Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon for a league clash, which will see the Blues backline try to tame a familiar opponent in the shape centre-forward Romelu Lukaku.

Luiz will need to be fully prepared for the individual battle and can’t afford to switch off against Lukaku, who has a knack of scoring goals out of nothing when he seems quiet.

The one question mark over Luiz – who earns £120,000-a-week, according to spotrac.com – is that he can have lapses in concentrations at times.

He’s been guilty over the years of seeing his standards slip in the crunch fixtures and he will be punished against Man United for any mistakes.

Chelsea fans can get behind a centre-back that has seen his confidence restored by Sarri and in truth he could see a lot of the ball at the weekend, where he may have to unlock Jose Mourinho’s side from deeper areas.

But Luiz has always had inconsistency to his game defensively and it may be a good job he’s got teammate Antonio Rudiger alongside him to potentially bail him out of trouble if he slips up.
