Should Mateo Kovacic be concerned for his place?

Mato Kovacic has made a very tidy start to his Chelsea career. He has started the majority of matches thanks to his well rounded game.

The 24-year-old has so many attributes. He wins back possession, he helps with the team’s high press, he is adept at keeping the ball in the final third and he is generally more tactically aware than Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

However, those two English midfielders are putting great pressure on the man on loan from Real Madrid. Both of them are scoring goals and making assists, something that Kovacic is not doing. He did not score for the entirety of last season at Madrid and he has not scored yet for Chelsea.

The Blues need goal threats from all over the pitch especially because their strikers are not prolific scorers. Barkley and Loftus-Cheek are both providing this.

It is vital that the third midfielder can contribute in an attacking sense. Jorginho and N’Golo Kante seem to be firmly entrenched in the team. Neither of them contribute goals and assists.

If both Loftus-Cheek and Barkley continue to benefit from Sarri’s coaching and improve defensively, they could alternate in in the slot in the left side of midfield. Kovacic would then be left to compete with Kante on the right side for the more defensive position.

Either way, the future of the Blues’ midfield looks bright.
