TCC View: Chelsea should attempt to sign 'exceptional' Everton star, he'd be perfect for Tuchel's system

If Chelsea are to win trophies this season, they’re going to need the depth of their squad.

Fortunately, Blues manager Thomas Tuchel does have plenty of options available to him and it’s a group that’s the envy of most in the Premier League. However, there are a couple of areas that may need plugging when the January transfer window opens next month.

Ben Chilwell’s injury has been a severe blow at Stamford Bridge. There is still no definitive timeframe on when the 24-year-old full-back will make his return after a partial tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of his right knee. There was an initial diagnosis of at least six-weeks on the sidelines following the injury problem at the end of November, though.

Marcos Alonso is a decent replacement for Chilwell to start as the left wing-back, but it’s a concern that he’s the only realistic option for the specialist position. The likes of Saul Niguez, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic can slot in as emergency cover at wing-back, but there may be a real issue if Chilwell’s injury absence is long-term.

Interestingly, Chelsea should look towards Premier League rivals Everton to bail themselves out of trouble.

Chelsea should target Digne in January

The Blues should be proactive in the New Year transfer window by trying to find a short-term solution at left wing-back.

Lucas Digne, 28, is exactly the kind of player who’d make an instant impact at Stamford Bridge.

The talented defender has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent left-backs in recent years. Also, he’s got 43 senior caps for World Cup champions France and is an ex-Barcelona player.

Chelsea should chance their arm by targeting Digne at a time where there is a lot of conversation around him.

He was omitted from Everton’s most recent match day squad by manager Rafael Benitez for footballing reasons, which is a massive shock given he’s one of the most high-profile figures at Goodison Park.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the left-footer has a “strained relationship” with Toffees boss Benitez. In addition, it’s “unclear” right now on if Everton would consider allowing him to leave in January.

In fairness, Digne was extremely professional this week on social media in the aftermath of his omission from Everton’s squad by claiming “that’s football”.

Perfect for Tuchel system

If Digne becomes available next month, Chelsea should consider him as someone perfect for Tuchel’s system.

The French set-piece specialist has shown in the past he can play as a wing-back, with his crossing into the box a key part of his game and he’s very calmness on the ball, too.

He’s not been at his dazzling best this campaign, but has been “exceptional” for so much of his Everton career.

It would be great to imagine Alonso and Digne competing for the wing-back spots at Chelsea, with perhaps a view to the latter becoming the full-time rival for Chilwell.

Incidentally, Digne is not a complete stranger to the Chelsea hierarchy because they were reportedly eyeing him in July 2020.
