Tuchel makes five changes, 22-year-old returns and Mount drops to bench: Chelsea predicted XI vs Southampton
Chelsea quickly need to pick themselves up ahead of Saturday afternoon’s Premier League trip to Southampton.
The Blues are preparing to face the Saints tomorrow in an important league fixture, as there’s still work that needs to be done to stay in the top four this season.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were stunned in their last league outing by losing 4-1 at home to Brentford, so it’s vital to get back to winning ways this weekend.
Also, Chelsea were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid on Wednesday night at Stamford Bridge. The London club now have a sizeable deficit to overturn when they travel to Madrid to play them again in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie.
The Chelsea Chronicle has predicted the starting line-up that Tuchel will pick against Southampton. It includes five changes from the XI that started the defeat to Madrid a couple of days ago.
GK and defence
Edouard Mendy, who made a big mistake in the Champions League loss, will likely continue in goal. He’s still the outstanding number one at Stamford Bridge that deserves the support of the fanbase.
The first of five changes could see 22-year-old Trevoh Chalobah return in place of experienced teammate Thiago Silva, who may need a rest ahead of next week’s showdown with Madrid.
Chalobah’s return means Andreas Christensen moves across to a more comfortable central role. Also, ever-present Antonio Rudiger continues as the left-sided centre-back.
It could be a familiar wing-back pairing of Reece James and Marcos Alonso that take to the field at St Mary’s. This would mean club captain Cesar Azpilicueta dropping out for Alonso, who Glenn Hoddle thinks should play next week against Madrid after being overlooked in the first leg.
It’s a midfield pivot of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic we are predicting.
The third change has ball carrier Kovacic replacing N’Golo Kante in the XI, which is a substitution that worked effectively against Madrid.
Mason Mount, along with Christian Pulisic, are two individuals that could be dropped against the Saints.
Mount couldn’t get any change out of the Madrid defence after playing 90 minutes, while teammate Pulisic came off during the second half without making his mark.
Hakim Ziyech and Romelu Lukaku are the two possible replacements to the starting line-up against Madrid.
That leaves in-form Kai Havertz to complete the XI and retain his spot, albeit he may need to move into deeper pockets with Lukaku on the pitch.
